What to do if your business is losing oxygen

We spend a lot of time working with printers and mailers who really, really want to offer multi-channel marketing services to their clients – as soon as they can find a client who is interested.  Well we have some exciting news:  We have found that client – it’s you! We talk with a lot of printers and mailers each day and we definitely see many thriving – and too many struggling.  A friend in the industry noted the same thing about ten years ago.  “Well,” we conjectured, “it seems like the big guys are doing well, but the smaller shops are struggling.” “Nah,” he said.  “The enthusiastic shops are doing great.  The shops that are trying to coast are going down.” And that is what we see…and the surest sign of enthusiasm is an active, ongoing marketing program.  We have had many printer and mailer clients sign on primarily to do marketing for themselves, and then, preaching as the converted, go on to sell multi-channel marketing services to their clients. Three lessons:
  • To sell multi-channel marketing, you need to DO multi-channel marketing for yourself;
  • When you do your own multi-channel program, you will get lots of leads and probably lots of business for your own company. This in turn will make you enthusiastic about multi-channel marketing, and make you much better at selling it;

The results, for those who pursue it, have been impressive.  They’ve gotten leads and they have gotten sales, which is kind of the point.  Sometimes they sell multi-channel services (yay!) sometimes they sell printing and mailing.  Most of them find the process makes them, well, enthusiastic.
