DECEMBER SERVICE PERFORMANCE LIMPS OUT OF 2023

Well, the last week of the year showed better service performance than the week before it, so I guess that is a good thing, but it wasn’t good enough to save a dismal December.   83.7% of First-Class letters were delivered on time, and a bizarrely good 89.9% of First-Class flats were delivered on time.  Sorry, but we probably need to write off the flats performance as a statistical anomaly – sample size was small.

For First-Class Mail overall, December was a terrible month.  A First-Class letter mailed in December, 2023 took, on average, 17.5% longer to deliver, vs December 2022.  A First-Class flat took 34.7% longer.  Flats added more than a full day to delivery times, vs 2022.

Once again, Marketing Mail has stayed consistent over the years.  This is almost certainly due to transportation – industry transportation simply outperforms postal transportation.

With major network change lying ahead, 2024 should be interesting to watch.  Happy New Year
