FIRST-CLASS MAIL STAYS BELOW AVERAGE.  SHOWS DRAMATIC DECLINE VS OCOTBER 2021

Fortunately, service did not deteriorate this week with on-time percentages off a little bit for First-Class Flats, a bit better for First-Class letters, and for Marketing Mail letters and flats.  Days in delivery were better across the board, so in that sense it was an OK week in that it didn’t get worse.  Still First-Class Mail is operating quite a bit below YTD norms.

This may be a bigger story:  For the month of October (through the 29th) the on-time percentage was well below that of October 2021, 95.3% on time in October 2021 vs 90.8% in 2022.  The poorer performance shows in average delivery days as well, 2.78 on October 2021 vs 3.24 in 2022.   First-Class flats dropped from 93.5% on time to 86.2%.

Marketing Mail letters and flats managed to continue to lumber along with roughly the same on-time percentages, and slightly better days in delivery.

This drop in year-over-year performance bears watching.
