US MAIL TRAFFIC REPORT FEBRUARY 5, 2024

ON-TIME PERCENTAGES STILL DISAPPOINT, THOUGH LESS MAIL IS VERY LATE

It is simply the new normal.  Less than 80% of First-Class letters were delivered on time.  Average delivery times were a touch better at 3.86 days, with 5.39% of FC letters more than 5 days late, as opposed to 6.83% last week.  Last week was the highest percentage of FC letters more than 5 days late since we’ve been doing this.  This week was only the second highest.  So, there’s that.

First-Class flats were actually a tad worse than last week, with only 47.7% delivered on time.   The average days to deliver a First-Class flat were 4.47 days, which is better than last week.  Only 3.58% of FC flats were delivered more than 5 days late, a big improvement over last week’s 21.26%.

Marketing Mail letters have been showing a slight downward trend, with 93.4% delivered on time.  Not dramatic, but we’ll be keeping an eye on this.  Marketing Mail flats were basically unchanged with 96.6% delivered on time.

For some context, in January of 2023, First-Class letters and flats were delivered on time 91.9% and 83.4% of the time, respectively.  In January 2024, the on-time percentages for those two types of mail were 82.6% and 68.8% respectively.  On average it took about .7 days longer for either to be delivered.
